did you configure your avast to allow the access to external drives?
normally, most anti-virus software today blocks the access to external drives, by default. it’s, by right, for your own good, because they’re one of the most potential sources of computer virii. you should be able to deactivate the protections via the program’s settings/options/preferences (whatever they call it), if you are confident that the external drive that you are using is virus-free.
