HILLSBOROUGH
2008 Hillsborough Memorial Service

On April 15 1989 over 25,000 Liverpool fans travelled to Hillsborough to support their team in the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. Ninety six of them never returned. Nineteen years later friends and family of those who lost their lives were joined by thousands of fans at Anfield to pay tribute to 96 Liverpool supporters who will never be forgotten. You can watch the entire service, which features readings from former midfielder Brian Hall and reserve team manager Gary Ablett, online now.

Hillsborough - The Documentary

‘Hillsborough’ - a new and powerful documentary describing the events and aftermath of the 1989 tragedy – was first aired on LFC TV to mark the 19th anniversary of the day 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives at a football match. Featuring contributions from the likes of Sheila Coleman, Phil Hammond, Neil Fitzmaurice, Peter Carney, Rogan Taylor, John Barnes and John Aldridge amongst others, ‘Hillsborough’ is essential viewing for not just Liverpool fans, but all football supporters.

BOSS: WE’RE PLAYING AT 70 PER CENT
Jimmy Rice 21 October 2008
Rafa Benitez believes his unbeaten Liverpool side are performing at just 70 per cent of their potential.
The Reds might have enjoyed their best ever start to a Barclays Premier League season by gaining 20 points from a possible 24, but the gaffer is adamant there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: “I don’t like to talk too much about percentages but I always say we can improve. For me, 70 per cent could be a figure but it’s difficult to say. There is still a lot of room for improvement.”

Next up for Liverpool is Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

The game could see Florent Sinama Pongolle and Luis Garcia face their former club, two players Benitez remembers fondly.

“Both were really good players and professionals,” he said. "They showed at Liverpool that they have quality. Both were important for us in different games.

"Sinama scored against Olympiacos and Luis scored a lot of fantastic goals. We have good memories of both players.

"Sinama is a player with pace and ability and he also has a very good mentality. He could be a very good player for any team.

“Clearly they’ll both try to impress and they have quality. Both can score goals and both can change games. They will be a real threat for us.”

Liverpool step into the Vicente Calderon with six Group D points after victories over Marseille and PSV.

Benitez thinks four more points will see his side through to the knockout stages.

“I think 10 points will see us into the next round,” he said.

Meanwhile, skipper Steven Gerrard admits he and his teammates could pay the price over the coming games if they continue to concede first.

The Reds have come from behind five times this season, three of which after goals in the last five minutes.

Gerrard said: "In the past few weeks we have proved that you can never count us out in any situation, and the battling qualities we have shown are very important.

"But we know that we can not keep conceding the lead in games like we have done in the last two matches.

"Sooner or later it is going to catch up with us, and we’ll pay the price.

"We have shown the grit, determination and belief that there is in this squad this season, but we have to start dictating games.

"However we are full of confidence after what we have achieved, and we believe that there is a lot more to come from this side than we have seen so far.

“We are ready to take it on to another level and the confidence we now have will help us.”

GARCIA: REDS ARE NOW CONTENDERS
Jimmy Rice 21 October 2008
Luis Garcia has spoken of his pleasure at watching the Rafalution take shape from afar - and claims Liverpool are now realistic challengers for the Barclays Premier League title.
The Spanish playmaker could line up against his former club for Atletico in the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday night.

Having watched the Reds dispatch the likes of Man Utd, Everton and Marseille in impressive fashion, Garcia knows he and his current teammates are in for a tough ride.

Whatever the result in Madrid, the 30-year-old expects Liverpool to be fighting for top honours both home and abroad this season.

“The team and the squad is getting stronger each year, and I am sure that Rafa Benitez deep down believes he can take the team closer to the league this season even though he may never show it publicly,” Garcia told LFC Magazine.

"I have watched and you can see the team growing. If they continue in this way they could win the league.

“When I first joined, Chelsea were far better than us, but the gap is closing and Liverpool can now win the league.”

Garcia scored 10 Champions League goals for Liverpool, the most famous of which came at Anfield against Juventus and Chelsea en route to Istanbul in 2005.

Atletico will be hoping the winger can re-discover his goalscoring touch on Wednesday, but the man himself admits it would feel strange to net against the Reds.

He said: “I am always happy to score goals and I am an Atletico player now. In my heart I would feel strange, and I would say sorry because I wouldn’t feel any joy scoring against Liverpool.”

On how he looks back on his Anfield career, Garcia added: "It makes me happy that Liverpool fans look back and appreciate what I gave to the team.

“There were times last year when I wished I was back there. When I watched Liverpool games and thought I could add something to the team, I became frustrated.”

Garcia is not an automatic choice for Atletico boss Javier Aguirre, though after impressing against PSV earlier in Group D he’s hopeful of playing a part against Gerrard and co.

“I have played in a few positions so far this season, mainly on the right but the boss knows I can also play as a striker,” he said.

"There have been games that I have switched to that role and confused the opposition. It worked against PSV and I set up a goal.

“Whether we try that against Liverpool is different because Rafa understands my game and will know what to try if I do that.”

He added: "When I first arrived things were not working out the way I expected when I decided to leave Liverpool.

“I was thinking all the time that I had made the wrong decision to come back to Spain. But this season things have been more positive, I feel a lot better about my game.”

Wednesday’s match will be followed in two weeks’ time by the return at Anfield.

Garcia claims it will be one of the most emotional nights of his football life.

He said: "The game in Liverpool will be very special for me. In terms of sentimentality, the biggest of my career.

"I was not able to say goodbye properly when I left because I was injured at the end of the season, it was the worst way possible to finish my career there.

“I was so happy there and am desperate to play one more game at Anfield.”

TOUR AND MUSEUM

“The very word Anfield means more to me than I can describe.” - Bill Shankly

Anfield - the name alone conjures up a million and one memories; be they good or bad, happy or sad, tragic or triumphant.

It is one of the oldest and most famous football grounds in the world. Originally the home of Everton Football Club between 1884 and 1892, Anfield has long since become synonymous with Liverpool Football Club and the amazing success achieved by The Reds.

Over the years some of football’s greatest names have graced the hallowed turf (which is actually grown from seed) and contributed to some of the most memorable matches ever played. Just think Inter Milan 1965, St Etienne 1976, Chelsea 2005 & 2008, to name but four! You will all have your own special memories.

The legendary Anfield atmosphere, associated with the Spion Kop Stand, but actually made by all the 45,000 squeezed into this intimate, cauldron of a ground, is renowned throughout the world. The flags, banners, wit and singing have even been celebrated on television, radio, film, CD and DVD.

“It’s the atmosphere that I love. It’s unbelievable. I’ve played in a lot of stadia, but for me there is nothing like playing at Liverpool.” -Thierry Henry

With plans to create a new LFC Stadium close by in Stanley Park you will want to see Anfield Stadium before it finally becomes history itself, and there is an excellent Stadium Tour, which runs most (non-match) days.

Club History Downloadable PDFs

The Stadium Tour will take you on a walk from the Players’ Tunnel down into the dressing rooms (the Home Dressing room extensively refurbished in the summer of 2008), view the Referee’s Room, imagine standing in front of the cameras in the interview areas, and then touch the famous This is Anfield sign as you walk down the Players’ Tunnel to the sound of 45,000 cheering fans!

“The dressing room has been like this for a lifetime and it’s like a listed building” - Fernando Torres

“Incredible… I love it. The great crowd Liverpool has in the Kop End!” - Jose Mourinho

Sit in the dug out, and then visit the Kop Stand - the largest single tier stand in Europe - accompanied the whole time by two knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides who will tell you all abut the club and give you behind-the-scenes insights into match day!

You can then explore the Museum, packed with history from the very earliest days - see a blue and white player’s shirt as first worn by Liverpool in 1892! - right up to Xabi Alonso’s boots and the match ball from the 2005 Champions League Final, and now, the 2008 Premier League Reserve Trophy.

See the five European Cups, making Liverpool FC one of only three clubs to have ever won this great prize five times or more. See also the F A Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, Super Cup and of course, the First Division League trophy - won a record-breaking 18 times - and many other trophies, medals, shirts, programmes, banners and other unique memorabilia.

The Museum and Stadium Tour has been breaking all previous attendance records in recent years; now in the region of 150,000 visits a year and Anfield is truly a ‘must-see destination’ for any visitor to the City of Liverpool.

Whether an avid Liverpool supporter, a follower of another team in the UK, or across the World, or dragged along by a loved one and with no interest in football, this is a chance to see behind the scenes of one of the World’s great ‘sporting cathedrals’.

LFC Museum & Stadium Tour Breaks New Visitor Records

The LFC Museum & Stadium Tour at Anfield has, yet again, broken all previous visitor records.
In July 2008 a massive 20,163 visits were recorded, a leap from 14,038 in July 2007 and the biggest total for any July since the Musuem and Tour commenced trading in 1997.
Since January 1st 2008, 96,498 people have visited Anfield, another record and a significant increase of 15,222 from this time last year!
There is no doubt that Anfield has now become one of the ‘must see’ destinations in the City of Liverpool, boosted by the presence of Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane - two players who have enormous ‘pulling power’ for Spanish, Irish and of course Reds fans across the globe.
As a result of this huge increase in visitor numbers, spaces on the stadium tour are now EXTREMELY LIMITED, until September 2008.
There are no places on a tour before 20th August, and few after that. Please do not call asking for a Tour before 20th August.
However, the MUSEUM is available every day to walk-up visitors.

Redknapp
